Just since last night, my computer is giving me "modem doen't detect dial tone" message. The modem attempts dialing, but I do not hear the click and normal sound of the dial tone before it attempts the dialing of my isp. I have checked the phone connection..it is working and I have checked that the set up is still set to tone, the correct area code and country. Is there a way to restore my to a date before this problem began? I know how to do this on my laptop (XP) but my desktop is a Windows 98 and I am not sure if that system allows for restoring the system to a prior date.

Aaaah Win98 + Dial Up lol.Anyway reboot the PC and keep hitting F8, select 'boot from last working configuration' and see if that works.

Find out the maker of the modem and re-download the drivers from their web site to a flash drive and then to the affected computer.

Sounds like the Modem has died. Windows 98 doesn't do system restore.
