Cause they are heavy and big, and many people use wireless or USB memory sticks to transfer data.

Because you're the last person who actually uses one. Why use floppy, when you can use a USB-key, or something? It's a relatively large waste of space (a floppy drive) in the preciously compact space in a laptop.

Well, the floppy disk is an increasingly aging form of storing data. Its capabilities are limited usually 1.44MB of data while a cd can hold 700mb or more. Also, with the advent of SD cards, jump drives, and various other storage devices, the floppy disk just doesnt keep up.

Floppy disks are the most unreliable medium to store data. Data storage medium has evolved a lot and we are now using USBs, CDs, DVDs, and flash memory sticks which are very reliable and have huge memory capacity when compared to 1.44 MB Floppy. So Floppy is a BIG FLOP. That is the reason we dont see FDD in most computers today.

Floppy drives were installed mostly in the 1990's because applications and data files were small. Today, the 8-inch, 5¼-inch and 3-inch formats can be considered almost totally dead. Computer files are much larger now, and the floppy drives are replaced by CD/DVD drives and USB ports.

First thing is that latest and floppy do no to go with each other lool. Floppy's technology just stopped long time back and thus have grown to be more obselete. Secondly after the "death" of floppy drives, laptops are now called notebooks and not any more laptop, and that ofcourse is with the help of intel centrino mobile technology too!

Personally I have always found it a pain that utter annoiance NOT to include a floppy drive. They are not even standard on desktop computers now.But as others have said, notebook users want something that is light and easy to carry around. Do you remeber how heavy the first toshiba laptops were?

Floppies store only 1.44 MB of data and you will notice that it can take ages to format, read and write that small amount of data. The smallest USB Key storage has at least 64MB, so many floppies worth, and very quick, and probalby the same price or cheaper. I bought one a few months ago at 1000 mb and cost less than a $100. That's 750 floppies worth! Imagine that !When connected to your computer it will take a few seconds for Windows XP to recognise the USB key, but it then appears as an extra drive such as E or F or G rather than A. You can save files the same as a floppy, only much quicker.
