Which codec would be useful for the sound...

...while playin dvd ripped files (.avi) in wndows media player.? I had downloaded a movie (.avi) file and the sound seem to be playng only from a vlc player and not any other video player ( real, windows media, power dvd). Which codec would help me solve this problem?
