It's a networking technology / communications technology between two more computers located in a local geographic area. I had to say local because if that's not the case they can be a WAN (wide area network), CAN (campus area network).

LAN is a term used when you "network" or connect PCs with (usually Ethernet) cables. LAN network is usually confined to a small area or physically accessible distances. Local Area Network means its a network of computers that is connetced to each other. You can browse files and upload and download ect from any PC that is connected. You can also include a printer etc. LAN is not really a technology in of itself... its just a descriptive term.
