It's a step up from DVD and Sony is going to use it for their Playstation 3. It's going to compete with HD-DVD.

Blue Ray is a technology developed by Sony that uses an extremely thin laser so that more information can be stored on a disc. You can store up to fifty gigabytes on a disc, although smaller sizes will be available. This technology should be coming to the states near the end of the year.
