What is the best setup for recording my bass or...

...guitar direct in GarageBand? I have been trying to record instruments (guitar, bass)direct into GarageBand via USB, but the results are poor. I have tried a couple of USB interfaces but still get bad results. When the internal Mike is off the recorded track is nearly inaudible.
