unplug usb key under windows 98?

Hello, does anyone know what to do before unpluging a USB key on a windows 98 PC?Under Windows XP I have a "Safely remove hardware" icon at the bottom-right of my screen, but I don't see any such thing under windows 98.So what do I need to do before I extract a USB memory key under that old system, whithout risking to corrupt data???
