Is there a setup to allow surround sound for my DCT

2200 from Suddenlink? I have a Onkyo home theater system and am able to receive surround sound on DVDs, but can not receive surround sound when listening to cable even when it is broadcast at 5.1. My cable provider sayd they broadcast in 5.1.
