Sony HD Tv setup with HD Directv. I have a question...

...about how it was setup.? The company that installed my HD Sony Plasma didn't set it up using the HDMI cable or use the optical cable. They just ran thick (Green,Red,Yellow) cables through the wall and into my Sony Receiver and Tv. Is this right? Shouldn't the HDMI go from tv to receiver to get the best sound and picture?
