Recently bought Philips DVD/VCR Recorder/Player. VCR

fine. But machine will not record or play DVDs .? Machine will not play or record DVDs.even Philips own DVD-RW. Get error message icon "Blank"suggesting I have no disc inserted. Phoned Philips.They suggested bringing back machine. Done so. But next one has same problem.Where do I go from here ?
