Raid 1 setup...reformatting drives....?

Hi I have a Raid 1 setup and am doing a clean install of winxp. When it goes to the formatting part of the install it only recognizes one drive. Are both drives formatted, or just one of them? What are my other options for formatting my drives without an OS? thanks!
