Possible Iphone wifi price?

I bought an Iphone the other day and just inserted my SIM card into it and it works just fine. I use the internet a lot through wifi and a friend of mine said that I might get a huge bill from Telus because I didn't chose a data plan for my iphone. My understanding is that wifi is free because I do the same thing with my laptop. Is my friend right or just a total idiot.
