When I Play a regular DVD on my HD player?

It flashes "480" for a second or two on the top right corner of my TV (52'' Sharp Aqouis). What does that mean?...if anything. Does it automatically play it in 1080 or do I need a converter or something?So does the flash of "480" mean anything? becasue that only happens when I play a non-hd DVD?
