No Microphone Recognition!?

I just bought a microphone, and my computer isnt recognizing it at all. I went onto sound recorder and pressed record and the tab doesnt even move. It's not even acting like its recording. Its doing nothing.I have Windows XP, but I dont have the installation CDs. Am I missing some software that makes the microphone work or something? Can I find a download online that helps? Thanks
