motherboard or graphics card signal cable?

I just built my computer today and when i turned my computer on for the first time, i could not see anything but a floating sign saying "check signal cable". i tried the same system with my other graphic cards and it does not work. when i put my new graphic cards into my other computers, it does not work either. i am really scared right now as this is not my computer but my friends.
