microphone quit working?

have tried other mic's.still no good when checking mic under voice recording setting in windows xp .says no mic is detected using nividia was working last time i used on yahoo IM.(months ago)only thing changed was upgraded to 8.0. tried to restore but no luck.any where else in windows xp that might be set wrong? or nividia dying?
