Laptop computer purchased in a pawnshop?

A friend bought a Windows XP based laptop in a pawshop and it will boot, but, is password protected. Is there any way to work around this? Of course it was bought "as is" - can I make him a boot disk from MY computer and let him use that?How does he disable the password protection?
