is the graphics card on the motherboard?

I was just wondering, i need to update ram and the graphics card on my computer, would buying a better motherboard update both of these things, i have a via prochrome igp 133 and only 512mb ram, and i would the maximum amount of ram i can have on this is 1gb, i also want to get a nvidia geforce 8800
