Is it Possible to connect Home theater...

...speakers and amplifiers to an existing DVD player? I have a SONY DVD player. I like to buy a home system(SONY). Is it possible to connect the existing DVD player to the home theatre speakers and amplifier, rather than buying a Home System which comprises the player.Is it possible to connect the separate ones with the existing?. In which case it may differ?, if it tends to differ.
