Ipod wont start Apple icon comes up and hardrive...

...makes wierd noises then nothing whats wrong?? when i turn on my 30GB ipod the apple icon pops up then i hear clicking from the hard drive then the ipod shuts down and the icon pops up again, and it does the same thing. i dont know if i need to change the battery or if i just need a new Ipod.
