IPHONE pic and text messages to non cingular users

explained??? My girlfriend has an iPhone and I have verizon and she told me that I must have an e-mail to accompany my phone. I looked online and it looks as though I will be charged 5$ additional dollars to have a mobile e-mail. Is this the same thing or could I get a MMS e-mail to get her messages without the cost?
