iphone + old att service?

I want an iphone, but I have the older ATT family service where you can have up to 3 phones. We have 3 phones.If i buy an iphone, will it work with this older AT&T service? If not, if I unlocked it, would it work?Or is my only option to upgrade to the new one.Thanks
