iPhone 2: Update or Completely New Phone?

My friend is getting me an iphone for Christmas but I keep hearing that the iphone 2 is coming out sometime mid-next year.I need to know if the iphone 2 is an actual phone w/ more features or just a huge update because if it's the latter, than I can just get the phone now and simply update it later. I just don't wan't to get the phone now and have the completetely new version come out like 8 months later. Oh, and will the iphone 2 come w/ GPS? I want GPS Big Grin
