If I buy a 240 pin DDR2 1000mhz memory, will it...

...fit in my motherboard that accepts DDR2 800mhz memory? I was just wondering if it will be compatible with my motherboard and will work on my computer. I know it won't be able to operate at the 1000Mhz on my motherboard. Will it operate on 800Mhz though?
