How to install Linux?

Which Linux should I install?Would I loose files and programs?Is it actually better than Vista?Will it work with a Dual Screen setup?Right now I have Vista installed in my computer. With a dual core processor, and 4 GB of RAM. I think my motherboard is 64 bit compatible
