How do i change my default signing in...

...setting to LAN not dial-up on the connections and preferences menu? Yahoo messenger wont let me sign in because its saying i am not online. the default setting is set to dial-up and the screen is grey and wont let me change those settings. I am supposed to be using DSL not dial-up how do i get it to let me highlight and change that to DSL and not dial-up. Please help i really want to get onto yahoo messenger.
