How can I record beyond 99 channels with my cable

TV setup? Here's my setup: I have an HDTV plasma, a DVD recorder, cable TV with 600 channels and no Comcast box converter. I plugged the cable directly to TV without paying extra to rent the box converter. Unfortunately, I can only record channels 1-99. My cable goes up to channel 600+. For example, I can't record channel 192 because my DVD recorder only recognizes up to channel 99. Any suggestions short of renting the converter?
