Help my Windows XP disk doesn't work!?

I had to buy a copy of Windows XP because my laptop didn't come with a recovery disk and I just tried to reinstall my windows yesterday and it took a long time for the cd to load and then it said something like "not in a recongnizable Win32 format". How do I fix this or get around it?
