If your pc is running Windows98, your pc probably wouldnt run correctly with XP. Windows 98 is over 10 years old... Probably the same as your pc. Xp isnt free (to most), and wouldnt be cost effective to buy XP and install on an older pc.

Ha, Microsoft giving away free upgrades - not likely. There are "free" ways to do it, but none of which are "legal." If you wait much longer, you may not even be able to buy the upgrade to XP, with Vista on the market now.

You can't get XP for free without breaking the law. To get it, you have to pay. So, now for a quick XP compatibility check. Give 1 point if 1 of the question's answer is YES.1. Is your computer a Intel Pentium 4? You can read the metallic sticker on the front. If there is a white AMD sticker, you can answer this question as YES.2. Do you have enough memory installed? Right click on My Computer, select Properties, and at the bottom above the OK/Cancel buttons it will display ###MB of RAM. Answer YES if it is 512MB or higher.3. Ask yourself 'When did I buy this computer?'. If it was in the last 5 years this is a YES.So, did you get enough? You need 2/3 to have a good enough computer for XP. Now what you need to do is pay for an upgrade with a long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long, long phone bribe. Microsoft currently are not selling XP, because they just released Vista (which only 10% of software works on). So that's why I told you about the phone bribe.Installing XP:1. Insert the disk.2. Follow the instructions.3. You're done.

Yes, there are many simple ways to obtain and activate almost any computer software illegally; However, that's a route you'll have to explore either yourself or by someone else's instruction. You do need many things to accomplish the upgrade yourself once you have a copy and key-code (this code allows you to unlock XP for full use and after it is used it is checked against a database of already registered codes over the internet). First, you'll need the required hardware. If your computer has always run on windows 98 odds are that it is a little old to be running XP effectively. XP makes the computer work more and that in turn will slow down your computer. If slowing your computer down a little would be a major problem I would try upgrading to windows 2000 instead (of just buying a cheap Dell because the amount of time spent learning and working to upgrade would probably be better spent just working at a job because you'd get a new computer and work just as much - it's really a choice between working and learning useful knowledge and working and getting a new computer that will work without much hassle). Regarding the information that you don't want to lose, there is a easy way to upgrade your operating system without deleting all of your old data, it should be noted though that your computer will run faster if you can find a way to save your data to another hard drive so that you can completely wipe the hard drive that you plan on installing XP on clean. Also, assuming that you would rather just leave the data on the original hard drive it should be noted that your data could end up in a lot of different places after the upgrade. During the installation process the computer will ask you if you'd like to format the hard drive before installing, or it may ask you if you'd like to delete or create any new partitions on the hard drive, as long as you don't tell it to do any of those things your data should remain safe for the most part. I say for the most part because while things in your documents folder should remain intact the programs that you have on your computer may still need to be reinstalled even if you don't wipe your hard drive clean. I hope this gives you enough general information for you to decide between pursuing the subject to more depth or junking the upgrade project and just putting in the time to buy an entry level Dell. Also, one more suggestion, typing in all caps e.x. "I AM VERY NEW AT THIS STUFF," really bothers most people. It's the internet equivalent of yelling and it actually bothers most people so much that you'll get ignored.
