Have PC...Needed a new hard drive, so I had...

...everything wiped out so I made backup discs for stuff...? Now, with new harddrive, the modem disappeared, and I can't get onto the internet at all, although the computer does start. Have Windows XP. Help...what's with the missing modem?. Using a cafe internet today.
