External cd ROM, Dell Latitude D400?

Hi!I have a notebook Dell Latitude D400 with external samsung cd rom. Loaded win XP Pro, got problem with it.LAst week, suprising the cd rom failed to work i looked on device manager there was a question mark so i decided to download driver for it from dell but still, it didnt work!What that could be?How can I get out of it?Please advive.Thanks
