Erasing HD of My Windows XP Without a CD?

I keep on reading about people needing a disk to reinstall windows xp. I was wondering if it is possible to clean the HD and make it like I first brought it home from the store without using a disk? If i do need the CD, since I don't know where the disk is, is there a website that I can go to and download that information of my own disk?
