Downloads to external versus internal hard drive

on a mac? How can I set my computer to download files I get online to my external hard drive? By default it automatically downloads to the internal hard drive, usually to the desktop. I have a mac ibook G4 and after installing leopard my internal hardrive is almost maxxed out.
