Download for IPod Classic 160 GB?

Hi I have purchased an IPod Classic 160GB, the question I would like answering is that once I have downloaded the IPod software will I be able to load my own library of songs onto my I Pod. I have got several thousand on a seperate portable hard drive and would like to download on to my classic. Does anyone know if this is possible and secondly how to do it.
