Does a Gbit Lan connector require a hub...

...to connect to the internet? I recently replaced my old motherboard with a new model that has a Gbit Lan controller. I can connect to the internet with my other computer through the 10/100 card, but when I connect the new computer and try to register with microsoft, it cannot seem to connect or find the connection.
