Do portable dvd players with the "Divx" or "MPEG-4"...

...signs play .avi files (avi files burned to a DVD disc)? My current DVD player says that it is DVD/DVD+R/DVD-R/RW/CD/CD-R/RW/MP3 and JPEG Compatible. It plays my movies that are in DVD format but all movies in .AVI format that I burned as back-up files on a DVD+R disc doesn't play at all.
