Delete Windows Vista and install Linux, how do I...

...do this? I just bought a new Dell Inspiron with Vista Ultimate and the whole system is soooooo SLOW!!! I've heard installing Linux will make the entire thing run much faster, is this true? If so can you please give me CLEAR step-by-step instructions on how to do this....that would be GREAT!!!!! PLEASE NO LINKS!!!
