chargeing mp3 player via usb- how can i keep it

playing while chargeing? my mp3 player quits playing when usb cable is plugged in. can i disable a few connections in the usb cable to engage only the + and - battery posts and not the sync connections? or can i buy a usb cable with only these battery terminals, so that it won't affect the play on status so i can charge from a 12v source while playing?
