Can someone hack into your computer remotely?

I have a feeling that someone has been able to access my computer remotely. Can that person access my computer if they knew my IP address? The only way I think they would have my IP address is because I have sent them emails before. I think the security of my computer has been compromised is because they seem to know the information that is only accessible on my computer. How do I find out?
