Can you keep adding files to a CD-R?

For a computer class, I have to occasionally burn my files to a CD. My teacher had me get a CD-R. I have a feeling the answer to this question is no, but can you continue to burn files to it at later points? Or is it a one-time thing? I don't want to have to waste all those CDs.
