Can I get data off my computer with a crashed

hard drive with an external hard drive? The hard drive crashed. I want to get the data off the computer. I understand that I can add a new drive and put the crashed drive into the slave position and extract the data. My question is do I have to get a hard drive that will fit in the master slot or can I use an external hard drive for getting the files off?
