Full Version: Best setup for outdoor/garage cats?

I'm a vet student and I'm totally aware of the dangers of having outdoor cats (chased by dogs, hit by cars, fights with other cats, etc), but we are perpetually sent e-mails about kittens and cats needing homes. The kittens are usually pretty easy to adopt out, but the momma cats not always. My husband is highly allergic to them, so even if we had one, it'd have to be outdoors/garage access only cat. If there was a cat that needed a home that was already an outdoor cat anyways, would this be a better alternative for it? Would a cat door on the side door of the garage with access to high quality food (or perhaps a raw diet as that's what my dogs get) and water be suitable along with a litterbox and bedding? We're also thinking about extending out the ductwork out into the garage to keep it warm and cool. Naturally, the cat would be spay/neutered with the right vaccinations and flea/tick and heartworm preventative.Forgot to add...we are putting in a 6 foot wood privacy fence around our whole backyard (almost half an acre) which would include the area around the back part of the garage. Pardon my ignorance as I've only had dogs...will that keep the cat relatively contained? When I said we were thinking of extending the ducts in our house to the garage, this means that the garage would then be cooled and heated pretty much the same as the house, so no worries there.
