to help vision impaired and touch typers as well people like me working in the dark, too stupid too turn the light on (or look down at the keyboard).
Actually, you will find its like that on most keyboards, because it marks where your index fingers should be in their normal or starting positions.
Prolly for blind people...Although why would they need the use of a PC...Hmm, I don't know.
