there's also smell of melting plastic or something coming out of my pc. i tried to clean the fan but it still makes funny noises and the smell didn't stop. is it dangerous to keep my pc runnning? i mean, can my cpu fry? or would it automatically shut down when it gets too hot?i don't know much about hardware, could my mainboard die? please help, i'm worried
probably full of dust and lint...try a vaccum cleanmer hose or some canned airedit..overheating will cause a permanently shut downyou can find a replacement part pretty cheap on eBay, new or usedbetter look into it ASAP !
The noise is prob due to the cpu fan. The fan is a very important part of the pc with out it or if not placed properly over the cpu could damage ur processor. It ur processor is an AMD yes it could get burnt. If ur processor is an intel the chance of getting burnt are much less cause intel processors' have a temperature sensor the shuts down the pc it get heated (This will redure the performace of ur processor). Check and see if ur fan needs to be changed. It better to change the fan then change the processor which costs much more.
You need to get it checked out ASAP. If you have multiple fans, do they all seem to work ok ? Is the power supply fans working ? I have seen/smelled computers in the past where you can smell burning plaster/rubber smell if the power supply is not getting enough ventilation from the fan.... usually this is caused by a bad fan or fan that just doesn't work anymore. But that smell is a pretty good indicator that (usually) something is overheating. You should at least check for hotspots in your case, and verify that airflow is adequate for all areas within your case (i.e. fans still blowing air). Any electronic components that are exposed to overheating for any length of time will likely fail. And yes, it could be potentially dangerous for your PC components to keep your computer running with that smell permeating.
