Apple's iphone is only for AT&T or for other mobile

companies too..!!? Apple iphone support other mobile company or other sim card instead of AT&T preinstalled sim cared in iphone.My friend gave me an apple iphone as a gift, I wanna use it in Asia with one local mobile phone (GSM) company here, but unable to find a way to use it, because no sim card slot in it??
