Apple iPhone?

Whats the reason for Apple restricting the iPhone to those on the O2 Network. Isn't this a HUGE loss of potential profits. Personally I wouldnt want one because they look too fiddily and I use my phone for texting which looks rather difficult on a touch screen. But I know plenty of people who would Love an iPhone but they are on the T-Mobile Network. Any Ideas?
